Lockerbie

Very peculiar coverage of the Lockerbie bombing story on the BBC last night. Their man in Tripoli, Christian Fraser, gloated that Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi would soon face a different ‘judgement day’ and would ‘go to the grave a convicted murderer’. Did he forget that he was supposed to be reporting rather than moralising?

The Americans – and the Brits, for that matter – are furious with the Libyans for celebrating al-Megrahi’s release, but surely if they were going to get annoyed with anyone it ought logically to be the Scots? The BBC explained that the decision to release al-Megrahi was nothing to do with the British government, and, since Scotland has no independent foreign policy, it ought not to affect the UK/US relationship. So that’s all right then: British politicans can have a go at the Libyans too. The Maltese Double Cross gives an interesting alternative take on the case.
